Araluen Arts Centre

Within the Araluen Cultural Precinct, Araluen Arts Centre brings together visual art, performance and film. Its permanent collection reflects artistic practice from Central Australia and the Western Desert, with particular attention to Central Australian artists and the development of contemporary Aboriginal art. Four galleries include the Albert Namatjira Gallery, while a sculpture garden built around a corkwood tree extends the experience outdoors.

Central Craft Mparntwe

Central Craft Mparntwe is a community-run artists’ cooperative with a studio, retail shop and June Marriott Gallery in the Araluen Cultural Precinct. The gallery presents work by members and provides a meeting point for artists, volunteers and community groups. Its setting also carries cultural significance, with the organisation acknowledging Arrernte custodians and the surrounding precinct landscape.

Papunya Tula Artists

Papunya Tula Artists’ Alice Springs gallery presents Western Desert art and the continuing practice of painters associated with the Papunya Tula movement. The company traces its beginnings to 1972, following the emergence of the movement at Papunya in 1971. A visit offers an opportunity to see artists’ work in person and consider how these paintings have entered public and private collections in Australia and overseas.

Mbantua Gallery

Mbantua Gallery’s Alice Springs showroom presents Aboriginal art by more than 200 artists from the Utopia region north-east of Alice Springs. Works include paintings and contemporary watercolours, with different artists’ styles and cultural knowledge providing a varied view of the region’s art practice. Visits to the Alice Springs showroom are by appointment, allowing time for a more personal viewing.

Yubu Napa Art Gallery

Yubu Napa combines a gallery, studio and gift shop in central Alice Springs. Alice Springs Telegraph Station Historical Reserve

The historic museum precinct at Alice Springs Telegraph Station interprets the Overland Telegraph Line and the establishment of the township then known as Stuart in 1872. Preserved stone buildings contain period furnishings and artefacts from the early twentieth century. Guided tours add context to the station and township history, while the working post office and commemorative postmark connect the site’s former telegraph and mail functions with visitors today.

Women’s Museum of Australia

Housed in the Old Alice Springs Gaol, the Women’s Museum of Australia preserves and shares women’s history and achievements. Central Australian Aviation Museum

At the site of Alice Springs’ first aerodrome, Townsite, this volunteer-run museum tells stories of pioneering aviation in Central Australia. The precinct includes the heritage-listed Connellan Airways hangar, erected in 1940–41, along with displays about aircraft, aviation history and the former aerodrome. Memorial Avenue was once a runway, giving the surrounding landscape a direct connection with the collection.

Museum of Central Australia

Museum of Central Australia explores the region’s natural and geological history through meteorite fragments, fossils and regional animals. Birds, mammals, reptiles and insects help build a picture of Central Australia’s living environments, while geological material reveals a much older story. The museum also houses the Strehlow Research Centre within the Araluen Cultural Precinct, linking public natural-history interpretation with a significant research collection.

AIATSIS Central Australia

AIATSIS Central Australia is a public facility in Mparntwe/Alice Springs supporting the preservation, digitisation and access of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collection materials. By appointment, visitors can view digital collection material, undertake research including family-history research and explore an exhibition space. The facility also works with communities to preserve locally held collections and provides learning programmes and resources.
